Heerenveen manager Robin Van Persie believes he has no chance of returning to Arsenal given what has happened in the past.
The former Netherlands international spent eight years with the Gunners but left for Manchester United in 2012, infuriating fans throughout his first season with the Red Devils, where they won the Premier League title and a game in which Arsenal players lined up to applaud him remains a fond memory.
Asked if he had a chance to work at Arsenal in the future, Van Persie replied: “I don’t expect to work at Arsenal, I think that door is closed.”
“It was because of the move to Manchester United, that’s how I see it. You never know what can happen in football, but that’s my assessment.”
“It’s still a sensitive issue for them, not for me, and it’s particularly sensitive for Arsenal fans.”
He added: ‘I have learned that planning so far ahead makes no sense at all. I don’t want that either.
‘I mainly live in the here and now. l really enjoy it here and I am very proud to be the coach of SC Heerenveen.
‘l feel I feel very welcome within the club and among the fans. I also think that is important that you feel welcome.’
